I was so happy to discover that there are romance books with plus sized heroines out there – and the niche of romance novels with curvy heroines seems to be growing! I spent some time reading plus size romance books, to see what they were like. I am thrilled to report that I found the following list of romance novels to be great writing and great characters!

Plus Size Romance Novels: Romance Books with Curvy Heroines

I’m happy to see curvy girls featured in romance novels, especially since I am one! Just as there are slender, waif-like heroines in many novels, there are a growing number of main characters who are described as feeling average, having big hips, small boobs, big boobs, or with some other imperfection. Some love to eat. Some drink excessive amounts of coffee and occasionally alcohol. I love to see wonderful characters who aren’t as “perfect” and “delicate” as romance heroines used to be written. While I’m happy to read romance novels with any size and shape heroine, it’s so refreshing to finally have some curvy gals.

Let’s check out some great romance novels with fat heroines!

Muffintop

by Avery Flynn

Muffintop is the second book in The Hartigans series, featuring Lucy Kavanaugh. Lucy, our ballsy and awesome heroine, is a big, beautiful, and successful woman. She’s an in-demand PR Guru, who works for the local, professional hockey team. None of her success matters, when a “concern troll” interrupts her dinner out to tell her that someone as large as she is should be eating a salad. He then goes on to tell her that she’s a 5 only because of her fantastic rack. What a dirtbag, huh?

Enter Frankie Hartigan, smoking hot firefighter and brother of one of Lucy’s best friends. He comes to her rescue, which is totally unnecessary. It turns out that Frankie is reeling from his own recent discovery. An old flame explained to him that he wasn’t boyfriend material – he’s the guy to call for a “good time.” On top of it, he has to take a mandated vacation, so he can’t even throw himself into work to distract himself from this new information.

Due to a series of events, Frankie ends up accompanying Lucy on her road trip to go to her high school reunion. Frankie and Lucy discover an attraction that envelopes them, keeping them in their own little travel “it’s-not-real-life” cocoon. Can it survive when they return to their real lives?

Author Avery Flynn is skilled at bringing wonderful, unique characters to life. The Hartigans series all feature strong women, who are unusual in appearances or quirks. The book is filled with excellent love scenes and descriptions that will make us larger women feel hot, too. I was captivated on the journey to happily ever after. I recommend this wonderful, very steamy book!

Grin and Beard It

by Penny Reid

Sienna Diaz is a bonafide movie star. She’s the current it girl; Starlet and funny girl, plus size or not. Her movies, the ones she writes and stars in, are raking in the cash. The public loves Sienna.

Sienna heads to Tennessee, in order to shoot her latest movie. Unfortunately, Sienna has an incredibly bad sense of direction, even with a map in hand. Enter Jethro Winston, the ridiculously good looking and charming southern guy, who comes to Sienna’s rescue. And apparently, he also has no idea who Sienna is.

Is he for real?

Jethro has a wild past that he’s put long behind him. He’s currently a Park Ranger and bear wrangler. When he happens upon a very lost Sienna, she’s in the middle of cursing out her map. It’s hilarious. He rescues Sienna and helps her find her way back to the home she’s renting while staying in Green Valley.

The Winston Brothers series is amazing and this book is the second in the series.

Misadventures of a Curvy Girl

by Sierra Simone

Warning, this book is amazing and definitely veers into erotic fiction territory. Ireland Mills is finally happy with her life and her body. She dumped the jerk who acted like it was a chore to be her boyfriend – as if he was doing her a favor. She was (mostly) ignoring her sister and her constant talk of fad diets and other stupidity. And then she meets Caleb. She also meets Ben. Caleb and Ben are more than housemates and they are looking to find their harmony.

This book does have a lot of body positivity within its pages (I LOVE that), mixed in with the usual messages fat girls and women get growing up. It does help us remember that we are more than a number on a scale… and that we just may be someone’s perfect fit. Or two someones, as the case may be!

This book has some pretty amazing, hot scenes and that alone may make some readers uncomfortable. Those hot scenes are really freaking awesome and the story is well written. I’m a huge fan of what I’ve read from Sierra Simone and this book delivered a whole lotta loving, in the very best ways!

Bet Me

by Jennifer Crusie

Minerva Dobbs and Calvin Morrisey. Two unexpected names in an unexpected (and pretty awesome) romance novel.

Minerva, or Min for short, gets dumped in a bar by the guy she was expecting to take to her sister’s wedding. She’s not heartbroken. Later in the evening, she hears David (the guy who dumped her) making a bet with the hot guy Cal, who dates but never falls in love, that he can’t sleep with her for $10. She’s pretty freaking annoyed. However, she heard wrong. It’s $10,00. And that begins the enemies-to-lovers portion of this book.

But to call this just a run-of-the-mill enemies-to-lovers book is an injustice. These two characters do not want to date. Yet, they just can’t help themselves. Even with exes meddling (which usually bothers me but doesn’t this time because of how it’s done), these two still can’t help themselves. Cal makes Min eat real food, instead of being on the constant diet her mother insists on.

Okay, it sounds awful with all the bad memories of diets and annoyed people, but it really is an excellent book. I enjoyed this read so much! It’s a great read, fun, and so satisfying.

Tall Tales and Wedding Veils

by Jane Graves

Heather Montgomery is straitlaced. She’s an accountant and a planner. She never imagined she’d end up waking up in Vegas married to player Tony McCaffrey. They agree to part ways amicably, as neither one wants to be married. However, Tony ends up driving Heather home and she’s currently living with her parents (while looking for a condo to purchase). Because she had drunkenly called her mom after they got married, Heather and Tony arrive and meet ALL of Heather’s relatives. Tony, feeling that he owes her one (which he does), ends up pretending that they got married for real. They agree to stay fake married until after her snobby cousin’s wedding and Heather ends up having to move in with him in order to continue the ruse for the month.

Tony comes to rely greatly on Heather’s advice and help with running his brand new bar. Though he doesn’t think he wants a long term relationship with one person, could he possibly be falling for Heather?

This is one of those books that kind of crept up on me. I love a good fake marriage/fake dating premise and I expected to love this book, which I did. However, what really spoke to me was the wonderful character development. It was a satisfying journey for Tony to go from player and commitment phobe to swoon-worthy man we could all get behind (or in front of, as the case may be).

Plus Sized Romance Novels with Curvy Heroines: There’s a Lot to Love

I’m so happy to read romances with plus sized heroines and the books above have a lot to love about them. I hope as the genre evolves, we will see more fat heroines whose stories aren’t just about being fat and having pressure on them to diet. Some of these stories have a lot less than others and as always, I’ll continue to add as I read more wonderful romance novels with curvy heroines!
